The Connaught

The Connaught

Recently reestablished to its previous eminence and at the same time zoomed into the 21st century with the expansion of another, moderate, Asian-enlivened wing and an impeccable Aman Spa. However the stolid Englishness of the place stays in place - a quality epitomized in its commended focal staircase (dim and woody of rail, brilliant and stripy of cover), which obviously drove Ralph Lauren into such an attack of aching, to the point that he dispatched a copy of it for his Madison Road shop. The Connaught Bar is a small Craftsmanship Deco artful culmination, and both Hélène Darroze's Michelin-featured eatery and the less formal Espelette are remarkable (the last with a view onto a mysterious Tadao Ando water mold outside).
